Searching For Files

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Search.
  3. Here are all the things you can search for:
  4. The thing we search for most often is documents.  This would be things like letters, recipes, and notes we keep for ourselves.

Note:  When the computer asks if you want to search for people.  It is asking about people in your Windows XP address book.  I don't know anybody who uses it so we shouldn't bother searching for people using this search function.

  5. Click Documents.
  6. If we know what the document name is we can type the name here.  However there is a better way.
  7. Click "Use Advanced Search Options."
  8. In this area we could search for words inside of the document.  We don't have to know the document name, just what the document is about.
  9. Click Search.
  10. If we can't remember what the document is about but we do remember when we created the document we can search by date using these options:    This is the quick way to search by date.

Side Note #1

  1. The first side note we covered were hidden files.  These are files that the computer hides from you because you could damage the computer if you changed them.  Here is how we unhide them.
  2. Click Start.
  3. Click My Computer
  4. Click Tools.
  5. Click Folder Options.
  6. Click View.
  7. Click the circle next to "Show hidden..."
  8. Click Ok.

Side Note #2

We talked about the Normal Template.  This only relates to Microsoft Word and only Microsoft Word.  If you ever find that Microsoft Word opens funny.  This means some word always appears when you open the program.  Maybe the margins are always wrong.  You can do a search for the Normal Template and delete it.  The file will look like this:
