Icons are in the words of Wendy, "Something that holds Something." It is a little picture that holds something. The something can be 1 of 2 things.
Thing 1 is a folder that holds more things.
Thing 2 is a shortcut to a program like Internet Explorer.
Here are some pictures of some Icons.

Here is the all important information about how to create a folder Icon and a Shortcut Icon.
The Folder Icon:
Make sure you are at the desktop. That is the main screen you start with.
To create a folder on the Desktop you need to right click.
This will bring up a menu. Place your mouse over the word New.
Click Folder.

Now you have a chance to name the folder. Press backspace to delete the name of New Folder.
Type the name you want. Press Enter.
If you mess up on naming the folder you can fix it. Right Click the folder.
Click the word rename.

Type in the name you want.
Press Enter.
Here is how to create Shortcut Icons:
Click Start.
Click Programs.
Find the program you want to make a shortcut. You would want a shortcut for a program you use quite often like Solitaire.
Right Click on the Program.
When a menu pops up click Create Shortcut.

Read the next question. It will ask you if you want to place the shortcut on your desktop.
How to delete Icons.
Right click the Icon that you want to get rid of.
Click Delete.
The computer will ask you if you really want to delete it.
Click Yes or no.
