When you look at Microsoft Word there will be 3 toolbars at the top.  They are called the Menu Bar, Standard Bar, and Formatting Bar.  To find out what the buttons do look at the picture.  If that doesn’t help, place your mouse over the button for a couple of seconds and see what it says.

To move the toolbar place your mouse over a vertical line on the toolbar.  When it turns into the 4 pointers you can “click it up” (click it up means to left click and hold the button down) and move it.  That means click and hold down on the click button.

The drawing toolbar is usually not present when you first use Microsoft Word.  To get the toolbar do the following:

1.    Click View

2.    Place your mouse over Toolbars

3.    Click Drawing.

When you start you may only be able to view part of the page.  Here is how to change that.

1.    Click View

2.    Click Zoom

3.    Choose the view that you want.  I normally choose page width because I like it the most.  You might like something else.  Experiment and find the zoom you like.

We aren’t done yet.  There is another view that we need to worry about.  Here are the directions for Print Layout.

1.    Click View

2.    Click Print Layout

You may find that you like normal later on.  The words appear bigger in normal.

The next thing to set up is line spacing.  Sometimes we want to have things double spaced.  In the same document you can single space and double space.

1.    Click on Format

2.    Click on Paragraph

3.    Look for Line Spacing.  Click on the arrow point down.

4.    Click on the number that you would like.

Quick Hint.  If you are not sure what to do click the following:

1.    Click Help

2.    Type in what you need help on.

Page Setup

Microsoft will setup the page to a normal setup.  Sometimes you might want to change margins (margins are the empty space around edges of the paper, orientation of the paper, or even add a border.

1.    Click File

2.    Click Page setup

3.    Change the orientation of the paper if you need to.  Portrait means the paper stands up and down like normal.  Landscape means the paper is wider like a wide screen television.

4.    Changes the margins if you need to.  They are setup normally and are probably okay.

5.    Click on the “layout” tab.

6.    Under “Page Vertical Alignment” you can center things vertically.  This means you can have things right in the middle of the page.
