Celestia Assignment

Celestia is a free program that can be downloaded at http://www.shatters.net/celestia/

Here is how you start and find Celestia.

  1. Click Start.

  2. Click Programs.

  3. Place your mouse over Celestia.  Click on the icon named Celestia. 

  4. After the program starts press the E KEY, M KEY, and P KEY.

Here are the questions and instructions:

When the program has started press the D KEY for a demo.  Be prepared to pause the demo by pressing the spacebar.  Pressing the D KEY again will restart the Demo.

  1. What is the first planet you visit.

  2. How many kilometers above earth do you begin orbiting?

  3. What do you visit after the earth?

  4. What do you visit third?

  5. What are the black spots?

  6. When you are looking at the inner solar system what does 1 second represent?

  7. After the inner solar system what planet is visited?

  8. What is Mimas?

  9. After Mimas what single star is focused on?

  10. What is the prominent constellation?

  11. What is the color of the star Antares?

  12. At the end of the Demo what planet do you return to?

  13. Why are the planets and moons always half dark?

Press the numbers on top of the keyboard instead of the side.  The numbers on the side won't work.

  1. Press the number 6.  Press the G KEY.  What planet do you see?

  2. Press the number 2.  Press the G KEY.  What planet do you see?

  3. Press the number 5.  Press the G KEY.  What planet do you see?

  4. Press the number 3.  Press the G KEY.  What planet do you see?

  5. Press the number 4.  Press the G KEY.  What planet do you see?

  6. Press the number 7.  Press the G KEY.  What planet do you see?

  7. Press the number 8.  Press the G KEY.  What planet do you see?

  8. Press the number 1.  Press the G KEY.  What planet do you see?

  9. Press the number 9.  Press the G KEY.  What planet do you see?

  10. Press the H Key.  Press the G KEY.  What are you looking at now.

  11. What happens when you hold the CTRL KEY, left click and move your mouse around?

  12. Press the Enter KEY.  Type hubble.  Press Enter.  Press the G KEY.  What do you see?

Use the information from questions 14 through 22 to locate the correct planets.

  1. What color is Mercury?

  2. What color is Venus?

  3. What color is Earth?

  4. What color is Mars?

  5. What color is Jupiter?

  6. What color is Saturn?

  7. What color is Uranus?

  8. What color is Neptune?

  9. What color is Pluto?

Now for flight mode.  Here are the directions you have to fly from Earth to Jupiter.

The letters M and P turn planet names off or on.  Make sure the planet names are on.

Control movement with your keypad.

NumPad 8 - Points you up
NumPad 2 - Points you down
NumPad 4 - Points you left
NumPad 6 - Points you right

A KEY - speeds you up (you can go as fast as the speed of light)
Z KEY - slows you down
The F1 KEY - stops you
